چکیده

The conformational and dynamical behaviour of viscoelastic polymer melts and solutions close to solid boundaries is of great interest for the polymer processing industry. In particular, when the gap approaches microscopic scales, boundary effects such as wall-slip [1], cohesive [2] and adhesive failure [3] occur on the same scale as the overall deformation of the bulk sample and their impact on the measured rheological properties can no longer be neglected. These effects are especially important when structural elements (such as those encountered in self-assembling biopolymer solutions, microgels and emulsions) dominate the viscoelastic properties of the fluid system or when the characteristic microscopic length scales such as the inter-chain separation or the mesh spacing of a gel approach the characteristic dimension of the probe volume. Previous microrheometer designs such as the Surface Force Apparatus (SFA) [4], imbedded probe particles [5] or AFM techniques [6] focus mainly on the studies of thin films in the nanometer range. On the other hand many industrial processing operations as well as the emerging field of microfluidics lead to flows on an intermediate or ‘meso-scale’ range that cannot be readily probed with either bulk rheometry or nanoscale measurements of apparent viscosity or surface friction. With the exception of the work of Granick and co-workers [7] there are few established experimental techniques that are capable of measuring on the meso to micro-scales. The aim of this paper is therefore to introduce a new design of a Flexure-based Microgap Rheometer (FMR) that allows the determination of the viscometric properties of small fluid samples (<10μl) in adjustable gaps that cover meso-scale dimensions of 200 μm down to micro-scale dimensions of 1 μm.

Recent Developments in Shear and Extensional Microrheometry of Complex Fluids

We review the design and construction of several new microrheometers designed to facilitate the study of non-Newtonian fluids using very small sample volumes (1-10 μl) and on length scales of micrometer dimensions. These devices enable both the steady shear and transient extensional rheological properties of complex fluids to be measured. The shear-rate-dependent viscosity and gap-dependent yie...

P 99: Self-Assembling Peptide Scaffolds as New Therapeutic Method in TBI: Focused on Bioactive Motifs

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common reason of brain tissue loss as a result of tumors, accidents, and surgeries. Renewal of the brain parenchyma is restricted by many reasons such as inimical substances produced as the result of trauma and also inflammatory responses. A strong cascade of inflammatory responses begins as a result of TBI which include recalling peripheral leukocytes into the...

On-chip characterization of the viscoelasticity of complex fluids using microcantilevers

Due to the need for a microrheometer monitoring the high‐frequency viscoelasticity of soft matter in situ, we describe a cantilever‐based microrheometer to achieve this purpose. The elastic and viscous moduli of complex fluids can be measured with an acceptable accuracy over a high frequency bandwidth of 1‐100 kHz. Some preliminary data on small samples (~10‐100 μL) of simple Newtonian and visc...

O13: Human Neural Stem/Progenitor Cells Derived from Epileptic Human Brain in A Self-Assembling Peptide Nanoscaffold Attenuates Neuroinlammation in Traumatic Brain Injury in Rats

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption in the brain functions following a head trauma. Cell therapy may provide a promising treatment for TBI. Human neural stem cells cultured in self-assembling peptide scaffolds have been proposed as a potential novel method for cell replacement treatment after TBI. In the present study, we accessed the effects of human neural stem/progenitor cells (hNS/...
